A turbulent current passes through the workpiece with the current pulse characteristic of the material. The evaluation of the received signals (amplitude and duration) can thereby draw conclusions about the internal condition of the test object without destroying it. Surely the eddy current method detects the material error, so that no crack or material contamination remains undetected.
For corrosion testing, eddy current testing is the most common method for quality assurance. Due to excessive corrosion of a component the protection layer, the conductivity of a material or the generally desired properties etc. can be severely impaired. For quality control of material defects on the surface, the eddy current inspection is another alternative for non-destructive material testing.
The nature and quality of the component can be tested in such way that material inclusions on the surface or processing errors are visualized by display. Often the eddy current testing is also used when measuring is impossible or impractical for other reasons, such as the size of the material or because of limited access. By the eddy current testing practically all electrically conductive materials can be tested.
The method is mainly used in industry, such as in plant engineering, tooling, equipment and vessels in shipbuilding, pipeline construction, foundries, power plant equipment and in chemical plants.
